Three Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 542 Earn Eagle Scout Rank

Brendan Fernsler, Colin Osborne and Nathan Russek of Boy Scout Troop 542 in Maple Glen, Pa., received the Eagle Scout Award, the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America, at a recent Court of Honor ceremony.

During his Scouting career, Brendan Fernsler earned 23 merit badges and held leadership positions including Patrol Leader, Instructor and Den Chief. He is a member of Order of the Arrow, the National Honor Society of Boy Scouts of America, and earned the 50 Miler Award. He also earned the BSA Triple Crown High Adventure award by participating in a trek at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, N.M., SCUBA diving at Florida National High Adventure Sea Base in Islamorada, Fla., and traveling to The Summit Bechtel Reserve in Mt. Hope, W.Va. He returned to The Summit in 2017 for the National Scout Jamboree, which attracted more than 50,000 Scouts from the US and abroad.

For his Eagle project, Fernsler lead a team of volunteers who spent 235 service hours restoring a 1700-square-foot playground at Jarrettown United Methodist Church, where he is an active member. The project included reconditioning the ground area by leveling, removing weeds and invasive flora, then installing a weed barrier, new wood border and mulch. The team also power washed the playground equipment. A senior at Upper Dublin High School, Fernsler plans to attend Penn State University to study cyber security and analytics.

Colin Osborne earned 28 merit badges and held leadership positions including Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Instructor, Quartermaster and Den Chief. He attended summer camp with the Troop at Resica Falls Scout Reservation every year. He also participated in the Troop’s high adventure trips, traveling to The Summit in 2014 and hiking the back country of Philmont Scout Ranch in 2016.

For his Eagle project, Osborne led a team of nearly 20 volunteers in planting more than 130 trees and shrubs at Pine Run Park in Upper Dublin Township. The planting project, which took 125 service.
