Leadership for Life

One of the most beneficial aspects of the Scouting program is the opportunity it gives to the boys to develop leadership skills. We’re proud of the fact that our boys DO lead. From leading the patrols, to taking care of equipment, to teaching younger scouts, and even managing this website, the boys take care of almost every aspect of our program. In fact, if the boys didn’t do that, we couldn’t handle a group our size. Here’s how it works:

  • After his first year, each of our Scouts has the opportunity to take on a position of leadership (doing so is a requirement for all of the higher ranks)
  • As he gets older, he takes on more responsibility
  • There are job descriptions for every job listing the objective, requirements, qualifications, and the level of commitment expected from the Scout in that job (see documents above)
  • We have an application process for placing Scouts in these positions
    • Boys apply for leadership roles annually
    • They submit an application form
    • Both the Scout and his parent approve the application, agreeing that he will meet the commitment associated with his choice
    • The Scoutmaster reviews the applications to make sure the Scout is qualified for the jobs he applied for
    • Elections are held among qualified applicants for certain positions like Senior Patrol Leader and Patrol Leader
    • The Scoutmaster and Senior Patrol Leader make the other assignments trying to give everyone their highest possible choice
    • In most cases, Scouts remain in their position for at least a one year term

Parents can help: Youth leadership is critical to the success of our entire program. It’s important that once a Scout accepts a position, he follows through and performs its duties. Parents should review the job descriptions for the positions their son is applying for and make sure they agree that he can keep the commitment he is making. Through the year, they should support his efforts to carry out the duties of his position.
