Troop 542’s November tent camping weekend was changed to a day trip to Fort Washington State Park on Saturday, November 13, due to inclement weather in the forecast. The highlight of this trip was definitely the glider competition. Like most troops, Troop 542 is divided into patrols, which are boy-led groups of six to 10 Scouts that participate in activities together, forming the core of the Scouting experience. In the weeks prior to the trip, each patrol prepared and tested glider designs. Then, on the day of the competition, Scouts worked together to assemble their planned designs out of foam board. Gliders were judged not only on flight time, distance, and accuracy, but also on the level of preparation and teamwork of a patrol. The trip was a fun experience that showed that a trip can be successful even when the weather doesn’t cooperate.
