Scouts BSA Troop 542 held its closing campfire ceremony via Zoom on Monday, June 15. The Senior Patrol Leader opened the proceedings with the investiture of 18 new Scouts to the troop. This part of the ceremony includes a video explaining the 12 points of the Scout law and is shown at every new Scout investiture ceremony.
Next, Troop Scribe Sam Wang presented the merit badges and awards achieved by Scouts this Spring. Merit badges in photography, family life, art, public speaking, plant science, and chess were awarded, and several Scouts earned Cyber Chip awards.
After a brief explanation of the rank system, Scoutmaster Mark Krueger promoted nine members to the rank of Scout, one Scout to the rank of Tenderfoot, two Scouts to Second Class rank, and two Scouts to the rank of Star. It also was announced that Scouts Kyle Higgins, Sum Harris, and Connor Donahue have successfully completed the Eagle board of review and will be awarded the rank of Eagle at a separate Court of Honor.
Assistant Scoutmaster Dr. Arland Hotchkiss presented two religious emblems. Greg Siegel earned the Ner Tamid in January and Sum Harris earned the God and Life award in April. He noted that only 66 Scouts in Troop 542 have earned religious emblems. As a comparison, more than 176 Scouts have earned the rank of Eagle.
