On March 26, more than 30 Scouts and adult leaders of Troop 542 left on this year’s bus trip – a two-day tour of Washington DC and nearby sites in Virginia. After a three-hour drive to Washington, DC, the Troop spit up by patrols to visit attractions of interest along the National Mall, including the National Archives Museum, The National Museum of National History, the International Spy Museum and the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. In the late afternoon, the Scouts regrouped at the Washington Monument before heading to the World War Two, Lincoln and Vietnam Veterans memorials. Afterward, the Scouts enjoyed dinner before taking a dip in the pool at a hotel in nearby Fairfax County, VA.
On Sunday, a small group of Scouts attended Sunday mass at St. Veronica’s Catholic Church while the rest of the troop held an inter-faith service at the hotel. Then, the Troop made a visit to Arlington National Cemetery, where more than 400,000 members of the U. S military are buried. The final stop of the weekend was the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, an annex of the National Air and Space Museum that contains the Space Shuttle Discovery.
The trip allowed Scouts to visit a few of the best museums in the country and exposed them to important moments and locations in American history.
