On the last weekend of September, Troop 542 Scouts embarked on a hiking adventure along the Appalachian Trail for our annual fall weekend backpacking trip. This was no ordinary trip! Scouts had to carry a load of supplies on their back, including food, water, and camping gear, making this trip extremely challenging for some and rigorous for all. Some Scouts, particularly those training for next summer’s High Adventure trip to Philmont Scout Ranch, chose to hike a longer distance along the trail. This experience gave those Scouts an opportunity to work on their physical fitness and learn how to cope with long distance backpacking so they will be better prepared when they hike long treks in the mountains of New Mexico. Other Scouts, especially our younger Scouts, opted for a shorter overnight hike geared for less experienced backpackers. Regardless of how far each group hiked, nothing prevented the Scouts from having an amazing time throughout the weekend. One of the most notable events was a stop during the hike at a high point of land called Sunset Rocks, a scenic and ultra-photogenic lookout that provided beautiful views all around. The Troop returned home Sunday afternoon with the wonderful memories and are looking forward to our next adventure: Hosting the Baden-Powell District Camporee, “Indiana Jones” style!
